Over the last few weeks, I found myself switching between three very different communication worlds.
One moment I was moderating a TV panel discussion on wealth creation. The next, decoding enterprise AI and data modernisation in a podcast. Followed by 1-minute digital videos on investing, saving and personal finance.
The variety in formats, subjects and conversations reminded me of something I often tell my clients:
Communication is not one skill. It’s many skills wearing different outfits.

Here’s what changes and what you can borrow for your own workplace presence:
📺 Television: Precision + Pace
TV rewards clarity and sharpness. You don’t get five minutes to warm up.
Try this: Answer in three clean beats - Point → Example → Takeaway. Concise is powerful.

📱 Digital Video: Hook + Energy
Online audiences decide in seconds whether they’ll stay.
Instead of: “Today I’ll talk about enterprise AI…”
Try: “Most AI projects don’t fail because of tech. They fail because of alignment.”
Open with tension. Close with clarity.
🎙️ Podcasts: Depth + Warmth
Podcasts are intimate. Slower. Thoughtful.
Listeners don’t see you - they feel your steadiness.
Try this: Slow your pace by 10%. Pause after important lines. Let ideas land.

The ‘Bad News Body Language’ Drill
Last week, I coached a senior leader - a CXO aspirant preparing for larger responsibilities.
But when we simulated delivering tough news - missed targets, strategic pivots, cost pressures - something changed.
His words were measured. His body wasn’t. He felt personally responsible for the emotions that his team feels when he has bad news to deliver.
Subtle fidgeting. Shoulders tightening. Eye contact breaking too quickly.
And here’s the truth:
At senior levels, people don’t just hear your message. They read your nervous system.
So I introduced him to what I call the “Bad News Body Language Drill.”
The bad news body language drill for senior leaders who dread being the bearer of bad news at the modern workplace!
Here’s the practice:
1️⃣ Stand grounded - feet firmly planted. 2️⃣ Deliver the difficult sentence slowly. 3️⃣ Maintain eye contact after finishing. 4️⃣ Resist the urge to over-explain.
Leaders don’t rush discomfort away. They hold it with composure.
Same message. Completely different authority.
Remember: Executive presence is often silent before it is spoken.
